The heptagonal apartment building
This design by EM2N for a compact free-standing apartment house was awarded second prize. It strengthens the character of the housing development at Stettbachrain in Zürich-Schwamendingen, retains a maximum amount of green space around the building, and fits harmoniously into the urban design context. The new building has four storeys above ground level plus a recessed rooftop level, stacked balconies, and an internal, top-lit staircase. The polygonal geometry offers orientation and views from the apartments. The design consistently minimises the ecological footprint by employing low CO₂ or emission-negative materials in both the construction and use of the building.
